Trade and Investment

The department ensures the implementation of domestic trade policies and trade strategies through coordination and supervision, coordinating bilateral cooperation agreements on trade promotion and investment, advising the government on national, regional and international trade policies, strategies and regulations that ought to be implemented and their impact.

The directorate is composed of one unit which is subdivided into two departments and specialized offices i.e.

1. The Trade Promotion Unit.

Functions of Domestic Trade Department

  • Leads the coordination and implementation of strategies and policies like National Trade Policy, Domestic Market Recapturing Strategy
  • Analyzes domestic trade performance i.e., market performance, demand & supply of goods & services.
  • Ensures price regulation of goods on the market.
  • Promotes and protects intellectual property rights and consumer protection.
  • Supports the efficient development of value chains.
  • Supervises, and plans for the storage and strategic management of oil reserves.
   

Functions of External Trade Department

  • Facilitates smooth trade between Rwandan traders, business entities and business within the region and international.
  •  It aims at promoting the access of Made in Rwanda products on regional and international markets.
  • Monitors and advocates for the removal of non-tariff barriers
  • Leads the coordination and implementation of strategies and policies like National Export Strategy, Cross Border Trade Strategy
  • Leads the promotion of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements that Rwanda is apart of.
  • The department oversees the implementation and coordination of activities of regional economic communities that Rwanda is a member of e.g., EAC, COMESA, AfCFTA
